Captain Nemo
Captain Nemo is the commander of the Nautilus, as well as its creator. He is a brilliant man, who single handedly designed the Nautilus. He frequently has mood swings that correspond with the nature of the stituation and can be on the verge of tears or in a fit of rage. The actions that he takes to specifically target ships that play active roles in the war shows his intimate abhorrence to bloodshed. Often viewed as the antagonist throughout the novel, he holds captive Aronnax, Conseil and Land aboard the Nautilus, forbidding them to leave. Despite his actions, he treats the three men well. His actions through the plot shows that he has righteous intentions, but often takes the wrong approach. Many did not agree to him sinking the warships of various countries in an attempt to end the war. It is believed that his deep-seated vengance for war stems from the loss of his wife and children.

“I am not what you call a civilized man! I have done with society
entirely, for reasons which I alone have the right of appreciating. I do not,
therefore, obey its laws, and I desire you never to allude to them before me
again!" - Captain Nemo
